ABOUT SHAWN
I’ve worked in music, television, education and filmmaking. I’ve always enjoyed the conversations where someone gets talking about their work and you start to understand why they care so much about it.
Those conversations are a big part of why I started Red Door Media. Sometimes people have been doing something for years but have never quite found the words to explain it. I enjoy helping them get there.
THE PATH HERE
Teaching changed the way I listen.
As a teacher, I developed a junior high course called Communications and Media Studies. I teach young people how to create, think for themselves and take responsibility for what they put into the world.
Teaching adolescents has taught me patience. Sometimes you need to ask a different question. Sometimes you need to stop talking and give someone a little room. People are more willing to open up once they know you’re actually listening.
That experience comes with me whenever I pick up a camera or sit down with a client.
SMALL BY DESIGN
You work directly with me.
Red Door Media is intentionally small. I’m the person you speak with at the beginning, and I stay involved through filming, writing, editing and the decisions about voice, music and sound.
I love that part of the work. Finding the right music, hearing a line of narration finally click, or realising a scene works better when you leave it alone.
But before any of that, I want to hear about your work. What are you proud of? What do people tend to misunderstand? What do you wish they could see for themselves?
You don’t need prepared answers. We can start with a conversation.
BEHIND THE CAMERA
A little more about me.
I feel things deeply and usually prefer a good one-on-one conversation to a big crowd. I also love a good laugh, including at my own expense.
When I’m not teaching or working with clients, you’ll usually find me standing in front of the drawer my wife needs to open, or cheering on my kids at the rink or ball diamond.
I love guitars, shoes, just about every sport, especially basketball, and small towns with big hearts. I write and record my own music, too. You can find my songs on streaming platforms if you’re curious.
